Eight-time Olympic Equestrian J. Michael Plumb Nominated to U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame Presented by AllstateTo say J. Michael Plumb was the stalwart of the U.S. Eventing Team for almost 50 years would be an understatement. He rode in seven consecutive Olympic Games - beginning when he was 19 in 1960 in Rome - and eight total (his final appearance was in 1992 in Barcelona). His contribution to the team’s success is unprecedented, and his fearless determination and tenacity never waned. Deep Field to Contest USEF Selection Trials for Show Jumping Regardless of discipline, things look pretty good when all four members of the Gold medal-winning team from the 2004 Olympic Games line up to vie for a spot on the team in 2008. Young Event Horse Judging Session at Galway Downs Marilyn Payne will host a Spalding Labs/United States Eventing Association (USEA) Young Event Horse (YEH) judging seminar at Galway Downs on March 27, which will be held in conjunction with the Continuing Education Clinics (CEC) program that will be happening that weekend. The seminar will start at 1 p.m. and will tentatively end at 5 p.m. Those that have already signed up for the CEC program can attend for free. Those that wish to sign up just for the YEH seminar will pay a $50 fee, payable to the USEA. There will be time in the classroom and then there will be horse-and-rider combinations to critique outside, as well. USHJA Expands Affiliate Sportsmanship Awards Program to Include Riding Instructors In a continuing effort to embrace the foundation level of the horse show industry, the United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) is proud to announce the addition of a Riding Instructor Award category to the Affiliate Sportsmanship Awards Program. This program currently recognizes a junior, amateur and professional from each of our affiliate associations. Callan Solem and Mianta Win the $50,000 Duggan Equipment Grand Prix at HITS Ocala Callan Solem and her mount Mianta were up to the challenge in Sunday's $50,000 Duggan Equipment Grand Prix as they secured the blue ribbon and $15,000 in prize money for Quiet Winter Farm at HITS Ocala. Saddlebred World Loses Giants Pugh, Barham The Saddlebred community has lost two renowned horsemen. Both Dale Pugh and Edward C. Barham left behind significant accomplishments; their presence cannot be replaced. USEF Names CSIO Wellington Show Jumping Team The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) has announced the team of four horse-and-rider combinations who will represent the United States at the CSIO Wellington presented by CN. The $75,000 Nations Cup team competition will take place under the lights at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, FL, on Friday, March 7. Week Two of Gulfport Offers Stellar Competition Competition heated right back up Wednesday, February 27, beginning in the hunter divisions, where for the second week some of the top horse-and-rider combinations turned in stellar performances. Phoebe Sheets rode Stowaway for owner Mindy Wurzburg to the championship in the first year green working, while Russell Frey picked up the tri-colors in the second year green working aboard Susan Baker’s Tell All. Repeating victory in the conformation hunter divisions was Terry Brown riding Tasty for owner Showcase, Ltd., and taking top honors in the regular working division was South Point Farm’s Renaissance with David Wright in the irons. New Hotline for Kentucky Horse Owners In an effort to support the needs of the horse and horse owner in Kentucky, the Kentucky Horse Council (KHC), in partnership with the Kentucky Association of Equine Practitioners and the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association, has established a hotline (866-634-0030) for Kentucky horse owners. The hotline is a network to connect resources—hay and other equine feed, vet and feed funding, rescue facilities—with Kentuckians who need those resources. Challenge of the Americas Announces Teams; 27 International Riders to Compete in High Jump and Musical Quadrille on March 8 The Challenge of the Americas (COTA) is pleased to announce the names of the 27 riders who will ride on three teams competing in the 2008 event featuring grand prix dressage and grand prix show jumping. The seventh edition of this horse sport spectacular will be held on Saturday night, March 8, at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, FL. Competition will be held under lights in the new International Arena. COTA is an annual benefit for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Spooner, Gatlin and Porter Pick Up Major Prize Money at HITS Thermal If the $25,000 Ariat Grand Prix on February 22 was any indication of what kind of week Richard Spooner is going to have at HITS Thermal, other grand prix riders should be on alert. The CN North American Junior and Young Rider Championships Now Accepting Sponsor and Vendor Applications The CN North American Junior and Young Rider Championships (NAJYRC) at the Colorado Horse Park presented by Gotham North are set to return, July 29-August 3, 2008. The championships are an excellent opportunity for companies in the equestrian industry to market their products to the next generation of the sport's riders. Morris Excellence in Equitation Award open to U.S., Canadian and international riders ages 18 and younger is being offered for the first time at the 2008 CN Winter Equestrian Festival in honor of the rider who literally wrote the book on the discipline.
