Hoofprints from the Heart: Taking Flight

When the Air Force Called Her to Serve in Iraq, This Soldier Kept her Mind on a Future Flight—of Olympic Proportion

The call to serve in Iraq came as a welcome challenge for Captain Amy Coleman. The 29-year-old flight surgeon was ready to serve her country and help her fallen comrades, no matter the cost.

“There were people in need over there, and I was glad to go and help. I was ready—-it was my time,” she says with calm confidence. “I’ve never been a spectator on the sidelines. If I’m going to do something worthwhile, I’m going to be in the middle of it.”

Coming from a family well versed in military life, Amy felt a sense of honor as she began her mission. But honors aside, it wasn’t easy saying goodbye to family, friends, and a Dutch Warmblood named Poseidon, especially when the trade-off meant leaving San Antonio for a sand-covered war zone. But with the 421st F-16 Fighter Squadron depending on her skilled hands and undivided attention, Amy put some of her greatest loves on hold, and jumped into action, minus the horse. In the meantime, Poseidon’s reins were left in the trusted hands of friend and fellow equestrian, Gayle O’Rear.

From EQUESTRIAN magazine: Friesians 101

The solid black of his coat shimmers as if his broad chest was cloaked in silk mohair. The elegant head with delicate, curved ears is held high on a long, broad neck with a swan-like curve. A thick, luxurious mane flows into a powerful body with legs accentuated by feathers and a long, full tail. Despite the beautiful balance of his conformation, there is still a sense of awe and surprise when he breaks into a trot so high and light it seems as if he moves on an invisible cloud. At rest, he seems a sculpture, too perfect in form to be real. In motion, he appears a fantasy, perhaps a trick of light or photography. However, when your hand reaches out with every expectation that what your eyes behold can not be, he stretches his neck forward, bringing a silken nose against your hand, reminding you that, indeed, beneath this bold and beautiful exterior there beats a heart so kind and a manner so gentle that you could trust him with a child. He is, after all, a Friesian.
